What’s New at Wizard’s Wardrobe?
Wizard’s Wardrobe is a unique one-on-one tutoring program that matches struggling readers from Albany’s South End with an amazing group of rigorously trained volunteer tutors. This is a free after-school program for elementary school children, and each student is paired with one or two tutors who then work with that student twice a week for about an hour and a half each session for the entire school year. The bonds that form between students and tutors are at least as important as the lesson plans.  The space where the children work has a magical wardrobe, and each child gets their own wizardly cape. Come to the adult Christian education class on February 5, 9:15-10:15, to find out how this program got started, how it has grown, and why it is so unique. Meet the new staff of Wizard’s Wardrobe: Diane Hester, the Chief Operating Officer, who grew up in the South End, went to Harvard Law School and was working as an attorney until she took this job in August; and Carol Green, the Program Director, who has taught both English and English as a New Language, mostly in Capital Region public schools, for over 20 years.
